So what this tells me is that buzz is generated by the publisher's willingness to advertise, and this extends to reviewers who will review those books that are being pushed by the publisher. It all sounds pretty depressing -- a bit like in-breeding or, in the case of NYT ads, like kick-backs.

At crimespree we reveiw what we like. We don't put in a reveiw for a book just because it is getting a big push.

And buzz comes from a lot of things besides advertising. The best buzz is generated by writing a really good book.
