The unfortunate passage of California's Proposition 8 is a by-product of Obama's success. By bringing so many African-American (and, to a lesser extent, Latino) voters to the polls, passage of the measure became possible. (Fully 70% of African-American voters supported the proposition, and a majority of Latinos as well.)

I had a signing at a Barnes & Noble this week in Orange County. The place echoed. The poor manager was down to what felt like half-staff. I commented that he had to be looking forward to Christmas hiring. He said he wasn't sure if he would be doing any.
