In the Times article, Motoko Rich says among other things that "Publishers are caught between authors who want to be paid high advances and consumers who believe they should pay less..."

As if, if only the authors weren't so greedy for those "high advances," the problem would be solved. Actually it's more often the authors' children who are the problem, always being so greedy for food, clothing, medicine, and a roof over their heads.

And of course it's not that simple, anyway. But just try saying so to someone who thinks David Baldacci personally sets the price on his Kindle editions.
