Although I had my doubts when I heard the premise so long ago, I really needn't have. This is Jess Walter, after all, and one of the genre's strongest writers returns with a story of a man on the run from everything, trying to rebuild his life by making donuts and voting in elections -- but of course, things don't really work out that way. The novel is political without ever preaching, fast-paced and full of humor. Is it perfect? No, but it sure comes close.
