Four first person narratives interlocking within the frames of a short novel? Few can pull this technique off but then, few authors are like Susanna Moore in terms of complexity, depth and the dark currents lying underneath a stark surface. Not only does Moore give three-dimensional life to the happenings of a women's prison but she shows that those behind bars may have more empathy and humanity than those responsible for keeping them in prison.
